The History of Havuzlu Asmazlar Mansion

Safranbolu Houses, one of the rarest examples of Ottoman civil architecture and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994, gained its present structure in the 18th and 19th centuries. As a result of the unwritten rule of Ottoman architecture, all the houses in Safranbolu were built in harmony with nature without blocking the view of the other.

As a result of this architectural model, the Havuzlu Asmazlar Mansion was built in a location close to the old bazaar center, and it is known that its first owner was Hüseyin Ağa, one of the mesne lords. Since there were vineyards surrounding the Mansion, this area was called “bey’in bağı” among people meaning the vineyard of the lord, and therefore today the street where the mansion is located remains as "Beybağı".

Afterwards, the “Ağsımazlar” family from Kazan Turks, who settled in Eskipazar, bought the mansion, and built other mansions around it over the years. From mouth to mouth, the mansion and the family began to be called “Asmazlar” among people.

Havuzlu Asmazlar Mansion, which was left empty for a long time and then used as a monopoly storehouse due to its size, was purchased by the Touring and Automobile Association of Turkey in 1975. Touring opened it as the first boutique hotel of Anatolia by carrying out the restoration works in 1988.

The pool hall, which is located on the ground floor and gives its name to the Mansion, is approximately 100 square meters wide and fascinates the visitors with its carved wooden ceiling and the famous pool of approximately 2 meters. The indoor pool with a fountain in the hall of the Mansion is used to provide coolness, to be used as a water tank against possible fires and to keep the conversations inside, and it offers a nice atmosphere to the guests who want to relax with the sound of running water.

On the vault floor at the entrance to the backyard, there is a dining hall for 60 people, where the authentic big furnace of the Mansion is located.

Havuzlu Asmazlar Mansion, which is one of the only examples of Safranbolu houses that have survived to the present day, opens its doors to its guests who want to taste the architecture and living culture of that period.
